  • 3, United States: Pan Am makes its final Boeing 707 flight.
  • 7, New York City: A Boeing 747 of CAAC lands at JFK International Airport, marking the first time since 1949 that a flight from mainland China to the United States is performed.

  • 28, Paris: Air France pilot Michel Breton flies the airline's last Caravelle service, from Amsterdam to Paris.

  • 3, Los Angeles: Pan Am founder Juan Trippe dies.
  • 12, Cape Canaveral: The Space shuttle Columbia, takes off. It marks the first time an American Space Shuttle flies operationally.

  • 19, Mediterranean Sea: Two United States Grumman Tomcats shoot down Soviet built Su-22 of Libyas Air Force over the Gulf of Sidra.
