Chhattisgarh is a state in central India. It was formed when the sixteen southeastern districts of Madhya Pradesh were granted statehood on November 1, 2000. These districts are Dantewara, Bastar, Kanker, Rajnandgaon, Durg, Dhamtari, Raipur, Mahasamund, Kawardha, Bilaspur, Janjgir champa, Korba, Raigarh, Jashpur, Surguja and Korea. Its capital is Raipur.

It is bordered on the northwest by Madhya Pradesh, on the west by Maharashtra, on the south by Andhra Pradesh, on the east by Orissa, and the northeast by Jharkhand.

The northern part of the state lies on the edge of the great Indo-Gangetic plain, and is drained by the Rihand River, a tributary of the Ganges. The eastern end of the Satpura Range and the western edge of the Chota Nagpur Plateau form an east-west belt of hills that divide the Mananadi basin from the Indo-Gangetic plain. The central part of the state lies in the fertile plain of the Mahanadi River and its tributaries, with extensive rice cultivation. The southern part of the state lies on the Deccan plateau, in the watershed of the Godavari River and its tributary the Indravati. Roughly forty percent of the state is covered in forest.

The predominant language of the region is Chhattisgarhi, part of the East-Central group of Indo-Aryan languages. The hill districts of the state are also home to the Gond peoples, who speak Dravidian languages.
