Colombian peso

The Colombian peso is Colombia's currency. It's formally abbreviated as COP (ISO 4217), and informally as COL$. Its sign is the peso symbol ($) (also used by the dollar).

The exchange rate as of June 2004 is 1 USD=2707.33 COP

Coins

The available coin denominations are:

• $50
• $100
• $200
• $500

From 1997 to 2002 there was a $1000 coin, which was withdrawn from circulation due to its massive counterfeiting, to the point that, once the order was given to withdraw, bogus coins outnumbered legitimate ones.

Bills

The available bill denominations are:

• $1000 (Jorge Eliécer Gaitán)
• $2000 (Francisco de Paula Santander)
• $5000 (José Asunción Silva)
• $10000 (Policarpa Salavarrieta)
• $20000 (Julio Garavito Armero) and
• $50000 (Jorge Isaacs)

As mentioned above, the $1000 was withdrawn from circulation to be replaced by a coin, but it was reintroduced with a new design due to the massive coin counterfeiting.
