Longterm Ecological Observatory

Longterm Ecological Observatory is a project off the coast of New Jersey, USA, to monitor the processes in the ocean with online IT systems, spearheaded by Rutgers University, Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences [1]. Already installed are sensors for temperature, salinity, transmission, light, light attenuation, fluorescence, pressure and velocity.

As soon as Internet speed increases it will be possible to observe and evaluate plankton online with quantitative in situ microscopes, to get more insights in some of the most fascinating but still enigmatic life histories of ocean organisms, like the Eel story.
