Taufa'ahau Tupou IV

Taufa'ahau Tupou IV (born July 4, 1918) has been the king of Tonga since the death of his mother Salote Tupou III in 1965.

He was previously named Crown Prince Siaosi Taufa'ahau Tupoulahi.

Before he became king, he was appointed Minister of Education by Queen Salote Tupou III in 1943, minister of health in 1944, and in 1949, Premier.

He studied law in Australia, where he became the first Tongan graduate. Before he became King he had been a minister. He has great influence in the country, together with nobles, who control 70% of the Tongan Parliament.

King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV. was a keen sportsman in his youth.

He is a lay preacher of the Free Wesleyan Church, and holds a very special position in the church. Under circumstances he can appoint an acting president of the church.

He opened the Ha’apai High School in Pangai on December 18, 2001.
